Pictures From My Visits Of West Dorset Featuring Weymouth And The Isle Of Portland

Welcome to this part of my site featuring pictures from my visits of  The Jurassic Coast of West Dorset. Pictures in the order of 1 to 3 feature the small seaside resort of Lyme Regis, The gateway to West Dorset with its maze of narrow streets and picturesque harbour. Pictures in the order of 4 to 6 feature the historic town of Bridport and one of the main tourist features of this town is the old Palmers Brewery situated in West Bay Road and has been in operation since 1794. From Bridport there is a 2 mile footpath walk to West Bay featured in the picture order of 7 to 10 and is one of the most scenic coastal villages in Dorset backed by 100 feet high cliffs. Pictures in the order of 11 to 16 feature Abbotsbury, One of England and Dorset's loveliest villages enjoyed by many visitors and the surrounding countryside. Pictures in the order of 17 to 22 Feature the 10 mile coast line of Chesil Beach which starts from Abbotsbury Swannery to Chiswell Esplanade, Situated On The Isle Of Portland. Chesil Beach is a vast bank of pebbles worn by the sea. The Fleet is popular nature reserve for visitors and local people and home to a wide variety of waterfowl and plants. Pictures in the order of 23 to 35 feature clips of my visit to The Isle Of Portland, The Jewel of The West Dorset Jurassic Coast. You can not really call it an Island because it is still linked inland by Chesil Beach and the Banks of Portland Harbour on both sides of The Causeway. The Isle Of Portland is also famous for its stone querying industry where Portland Stone is Manufactured and has been used to erect England's most historic buildings such as St Paul's Cathedral and other buildings worldwide. Pictures in the order of 36 to 45 feature the seaside town of Weymouth, Steeped in Maritime history and also has reputation to get the most sunshine in the country compared to its other neighbours. King George III had many holidays in Weymouth during 1789 to 1805.      

Lyme Regis. Nice little seaside town and known as The Pearl of Dorset. This is looking towards the west end of the sea front.

Lyme Regis. This is looking north east towards the resort from the harbour, Known as The Cob, Which protects the beach from south westerly storms.

Lyme Regis. This is looking up into the square of this lovely seaside town, towards its stack of white washed cottages and was taken in November 2007

Bridport. The main tourist town of West Dorset and Lyme Bay and this is looking down South Street, One of the town's oldest streets.

Bridport Arts Centre. Located in South Street and is one of the town's most attractive buildings, Noted for its neat Georgian design

Bridport. This scene is looking towards Palmers Brewery, situated by the River Brit and has been in operation since 1794.

West Bay. This is looking west into The Harbour of this small fishing Hamlet and this part of The south coast is very much enjoyed by many visitors.

West Bay. Situated about 1 mile south of Bridport and this is looking across the Harbour, Over to the west end of this village towards West Cliff.

Abbotsbury. One of Englands most loveliest villages and much enjoyed by Dorset Tourists.

Abbotsbury. This scene is looking north towards this picturesque village from the approach footpath to Chapel hill and was taken in Autumn 2007.

Abbotsbury. This scene is looking over towards St Catherine's Chapel and is solidly built to withstand the English Channel Gales.

Abbotsbury. Taken on my north west approach into this village and as you can see it was a very unsettled afternoon, mixed with heavy Showers and Sun.

Langton Herring. Pleasent Village Situated about halfway between Weymouth and Abbotsbury. Taken during my September visit of 2007.

Gore Cove. This is on The South West Coast Path, Looking towards The Moonfleet Hotel with grand views of Chesil Beach. Taken on my walk to Abbotsbury.

Chesil Beach. This scene is on The South West Coast Path at East Fleet, Situated about 2 miles west of Portland Harbour and was taken Autumn 2007.

Chesil Beach. This scene is near Wyke Regis looking west towards its Marshy beach. This part of the coast is popular with bird watchers.

Portland Harbour. This is at Wyke Regis; On the coast footpath looking west towards the Causeway at Ferry Bridge and was taken Autumn 2007.

Fortuneswell. Situated on The Isle Of Portland and this is looking from the top side of the main centre with clear sea views towards Weymouth Bay.

Fortuneswell War Memorial. Situated on The Isle Of Portland at the south end of the village and this scene is overlooking Chesil Beach and Lyme Bay.

Easton. Situated on The Isle Of Portland, In the centre of this 4.5 mile long peninssula and this is in the village green. Taken during Autumn 2007.

Rufus Castle. Situated on The Isle Of Portland, Sitting high above Church Ope Cove on the east side of this Island. Taken Autumn 2007.

St Andrew's Church Ruin. Once the main place of worship for Portlanders and sits below Rufus Castle as you approach Church Ope Cove.

Isle Of Portland. This is one of The Disused quarrys that overlook the south east side of this Island and there are grand views across Weymouth Bay.

The Obelisk. Situated on The Isle Of Portland, Just south of Portland Bill Lighthouse and taken during Autumn 2007.

Portland Bill Lighthouse. One of the most famous worldwide tourist atractions because of its remote location and was taken in September 2007.

Portland Bill Lighthouse. As you can see this is one of the wildist parts of the Dorset coat, Often battered with severe storms. Taken Autumn 2007.

Pulpit Rock. Situated at the very end of Portland Bill and is Dorset's most southerly point.

West Wear Cliffs. Situated on The Isle Of Portland at the north west end of this Island and this is looking over towards Chesil Beach.

Spirit Of Portland. Monument designed by artist and & sculptor Joanna Sczuwalska and was taken during my Autumn visit of 2007.

Weymouth. Popular Dorset holiday resort with a long golden stretch of clean sands and was very much enjoyed by King George III
