Pictures From My Cycle Tours Of The North York Moors And East Coast

Welcome to this part of my site featuring pictures from my cycle tours of The North York Moors and East Coast. It is by far the most beautiful coast line of not only North Yorkshire but the whole of North East England. The North York Moors are also a challenge for the cyclist and as there are very steep climbs to the tops you need to be very fit, But the scenic views are very rewarding and there are many nice quiet roads leading over the middle of the Moors such as the old Roman road over Wheeldale Moor. The old Whitby to Scarborough railway line has now been converted into a traffic free cycle path and is part of the national cycle network of route 1. It is also suitable for family rides, Although children must be supervised by an adult as there are some quiet steep hills for a railway track. Like other railways of that era it became a fatal victim of closure during the 1960s and was a sad loss for the Yorkshire coast as it was one of the most scenic coast railways in the Country. The old station sites and buildings still exist in the villages of Robin Hoods Bay, Ravenscar and Cloughton and are ideal for a short rest break. If you wish to try alternative routes to this track, Please be aware that the A171 and A165 into Scarborough carry very heavy traffic and these roads are best avoided particularly during the busy tourist season. Picture 1 features the picturesque village of Newton On Rawcliffe and is the last refreshment stop before the long up and down hill climb over Wheeldale Moor. Pictures in the order of 2 and 3 feature my climb over Wheeldale Moor and as you can see the green summer colours are in full bloom. Pictures in the order of 4 to 6 feature the fishing seaside town and resort of Whitby, Which I have visited many times during my cycle tours during the 1980s and the new Youth Hostel is a much better improvement compared to the old one for its cleanliness and provides very a very good meals service. Pictures in the order of 7 to 9 are highlights of the Whitby to Scarborough cycle track and feature some fantastic views looking over to Robin Hoods Bay and Ravenscar. Picture 10 is the lovely picture postcard village of Thornton-le-Dale situated about 2 miles east of Pickering and although this village is situated on the busy A170 Scarborough road, It is a good gateway village for starting the Dolby Forest Trail and touring the south east fringe of The North York Moors. Pictures in the order of 11 to 14 are from a revisited cycle tour and are feature some good quality pictures of Robin Hoods Bay, My favourite village of the entire East Coast of England.

Newton On Rawcliffe. Pleasent village situated about 3 miles north of Pickering, Overlooking the meltwater gorge of Newtondale.

Wheeldale Moor. This scene is looking south towards Rutmoor Beck with veiws of Cropton Forest in the distance.

Wheeldale Moor. This scene is looking north towards the steep decend down to Wheeldale Gill and is one of the longest climbs up towards High Moor.

The Pleasent seaside town of Whitby. Taken on a summer evening from the east pier looking up to the Abbey with grand views of Church Street cottages.

Whitby. Taken on a summer evening and this scene is looking south from the east pier towards the main town and harbour.

Whitby. This is a summer night time scene looking north, Over from the famous 199 steps towards the mouth of the River Esk as it joins the North Sea.

Robin Hoods Bay. Taken on the cycle path to Scarborough and dispite a bit of haze in the background the lovely red brick cottages still stand out.

Ravenscar. This scene is on the Whitby to Scarborough cycle path and the milestone also tells you the route number and distance between the two places

Ravenscar. Situated at the southern end of Robin Hoods Bay and is sited on some of the highest cliffs of this coastline around about 600 feet.

Thornton-le-Dale. Situated about 2 miles east of Pickering on the Thirsk to Scarborough road and is a popular tourist village for refreshment.

Robin Hoods Bay. Taken on the Cleveland Way footpath on my approach from Boggle Hole Youth Hostal. A torch or cycle lamp is recommended after dark

Robin Hoods Bay. Similar view as picture 7 in almost the same location but clearer view due to better visability.

Robin Hoods Bay. This is the Cleveland Way approach into the North end of the village and more recomended for cyclists and freeweeling is necessary.

Robin Hoods Bay. This is on the beach at low tide looking into the village and as you can see, the sea walls get a good battering from Winter storms.
